I wrote this blog to express my perspective on some of the experiences I’ve been fortunate to have as a wedding and event planner for 9+ years. It’s been a joy to work with so many amazingly professional wedding and events venues and vendors. From the support team I’ve had women and men since 2008 at my first event, which was two full coach buses to Charles Town, to our first women’s show in Roanoke where I was given the top prize giveaway of a trip including airfare and hotel to Vegas (yes I did that) to our very first bridal show in 2009 at the first Lynchburg Bridal Expo. We’ve paved the way and opened doors unafraid of stepping outside the box to gain clients and new business. But the networking has added so much value and benefits to my business—Bedford Area Chamber, Lynchburg Retail Merchants Association, Lynchburg Wedding Professionals Networking Group, Community of Charlottesville Wedding and Events Professionals and touring venues throughout Central VA, and many wedding groups on social media, such as Facebook and LinkedIn.
One of the highlights of my wedding career has been becoming a member of the Association of Bridal Consultants under the astute and caring leadership of David Woods, President, which has enhanced my exposure, leadership skills, and increased my wedding knowledge. I had the opportunity to meet and take a picture (yay!) with David Tutera, one of the most well-known celebrity event planners in the world! What other profession is as beautiful, glamorous, and exciting as the world of weddings?
One thing I’m thankful for is the common ties that bind the wedding profession—the vendors–my peers. I learned a lot by working many events and weddings with my peers from Lynchburg, Amherst County, Appomattox, Bedford County, Blacksburg, Campbell County, Charlottesville, DC, Detroit, Hampton Roads, Maryland, Northern VA, Richmond, Roanoke and Waynesboro. When you’re coordinating a wedding or event with multiple priorities and having to handle stress, you learn to handle it graciously or you wither. This is a career that having passion about your job is a must!
What have I learned from all of this? That you should be a team player! You should do the best job possible to please your clients. When you refer another vendor, and they work with you at an event that you were hired for, it’s best to discuss their responsibilities and scope of duties as well as yours. I would even venture to say to have a written description of responsibilities so there’s clarity. When you sub-contract duties, clarify whether their business cards and posting pictures to social media are allowed, and make sure if you’re the sub-contractor and are hired by another vendor, to honor that verbal and written agreement with the vendor who referred you, and is responsible for you getting hired. That, in my opinion, is common courtesy, respect and integrity. Once that’s lost, it usually cannot be regained.
